No U-Turn, No Left Turn and No Turn on Red Signs
Turn prohibition signs tell you which moves are not allowed from an intersection approach, and NO TURN ON RED signs tell you where you may not turn on a red signal. Here is what the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) says about each one.

The short answer
Movement prohibition signs, such as No Right Turn, No Left Turn, NO TURNS, No U-Turn and No Straight Through, mark moves that are prohibited from an entire intersection approach. A NO TURN ON RED sign means you may not turn on a circular red signal at that approach; it should be installed near the signal head, and it should be considered where an engineering study finds conditions such as poor sight distance or too many pedestrian conflicts with right turns on red.
Turn prohibition signs
What they do: the MUTCD calls these Movement Prohibition signs. They shall be installed where specific movements are prohibited at an intersection approach, and should only be used to prohibit a turn or through movement from an entire approach, not to show which lane may turn.
The signs: No Right Turn (R3-1), No Left Turn (R3-2), NO TURNS (R3-3), No U-Turn (R3-4), the combination No U or Left Turn (R3-18) and No Straight Through (R3-27).
Look: movement prohibition signs show the prohibited movement under a red circle and diagonal. Regulatory signs are rectangular unless the MUTCD designates another shape.
Vehicle types: where a restriction applies only to certain vehicle classes, signs with a supplementary legend may show the vehicle class that is restricted or exempted.
Where they may be left off: No Left Turn and No Right Turn signs may be omitted where ONE WAY signs are used, and movement prohibition signs may be omitted at an expressway ramp entrance or channelized intersection whose design clearly shows the one-way movement.

Where they are placed
The MUTCD gives this placement guidance for each sign:
| Sign | Where it should go |
|---|---|
| No Right Turn (R3-1) | At least one over the roadway or at a right-hand corner of the intersection. |
| No Left Turn (R3-2) | At least one over the roadway, at the far left corner, on a median, or with the STOP or YIELD sign on the near right corner. |
| NO TURNS (R3-3) | Two signs: one where a No Right Turn sign would go and one where a No Left Turn sign would go. |
| No U-Turn (R3-4) and No U or Left Turn (R3-18) | At least one at a location used for No Left Turn signs. Where both left turns and U-turns are prohibited, the R3-18 sign should be used instead of separate signs. |
| No Straight Through (R3-27) | At least one over the roadway or where drivers who might go straight through can see it. |
| At traffic signals | No Right Turn next to the signal face seen from the right lane; No Left Turn, No U-Turn or No U or Left Turn next to the signal face seen from the left lane; NO TURNS next to a signal face seen by everyone on the approach, or two signs. A post-mounted sign may supplement an overhead one. |
From the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition with Revision 1, Section 2B.26, read November 4, 2026. No Left Turn, No U-Turn and No U or Left Turn signs shall not be used on roundabout approaches to prohibit left turns onto the circular roadway.
Part-time restrictions
When a turn is banned only at certain times, the MUTCD lists these choices in order of preference:
1. Blank-out or changeable message sign that shows the prohibited movement only while the ban applies, especially at signalized intersections. A blank-out sign shows a red circle and diagonal with the movement in white on a black background.
2. Permanent signs with the hours and days the ban applies (R3-1g and R3-1h).
3. Portable signs installed by proper authority off the roadway at each corner, used only while the ban applies.
From the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition with Revision 1, Section 2B.26, read November 4, 2026.
NO TURN ON RED signs
When it is required: where a right turn on a circular red signal (or a left turn on red from a one-way street onto a one-way street) is to be prohibited, the MUTCD says a NO TURN ON RED word message sign (R10-11 or R10-11b) shall be used. The symbolic version (R10-11a) shall be used where the approach has both circular red and red arrow signals.
Placement: it should be installed near the appropriate signal head. A conventional-size sign on the far side of the intersection more than 120 feet past the stop line must have a duplicate on the near side.
Part-time: a blank-out sign may show the restriction only during certain times or parts of the signal cycle, or a static sign may carry a plaque with the hours and days. White LEDs may light the border while the restriction is on.
Lane-specific signs: on signalized approaches with more than one right-turn lane, a NO TURN ON RED EXCEPT FROM RIGHT LANE (R10-11c) sign or a NO TURN ON RED FROM THIS LANE (R10-11d) sign over the lane may be used.
Related signs: where turns on red are allowed on a steady red arrow, a RIGHT (LEFT) ON RED ARROW AFTER STOP (R10-17a) sign should be next to the arrow. A RIGHT TURN ON RED MUST YIELD TO U-TURN (R10-30) sign may remind drivers to yield to U-turning traffic.
From the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition with Revision 1, Section 2B.60, read November 4, 2026. State law sets when a turn on red is otherwise allowed where you drive.
Why turns on red are banned
The MUTCD says a No Turn on Red sign should be considered when an engineering study finds one or more of these conditions:
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sight distance | Not enough sight distance to vehicles approaching from the left (or right, if applicable). |
| Intersection layout | Geometrics or operations of the intersection that might cause unexpected conflicts. |
| Pedestrian or bicycle phase | The signal has an exclusive pedestrian or bicycle phase. |
| Pedestrian conflicts | An unacceptable number of conflicting pedestrian movements with right-turn-on-red maneuvers, especially involving children, older pedestrians or people with disabilities. |
| Crash history | More than three right-turn-on-red crashes reported in a 12-month period on that approach. |
| Skewed intersection | The angle of the crossing roads makes it hard to see approaching traffic. |

No U-turn and no turn on red sign FAQ
What does a No U-Turn sign mean?
The No U-Turn (R3-4) sign marks an intersection approach where U-turns are prohibited. The MUTCD says at least one should be placed at a location used for No Left Turn signs, such as over the roadway, at the far left corner, on a median, or with the STOP or YIELD sign on the near right corner.
What sign is used when both left turns and U-turns are banned?
The combination No U or Left Turn (R3-18) sign. The MUTCD says it should be used instead of separate No Left Turn and No U-Turn signs when both movements are prohibited.
What does NO TURN ON RED mean?
It means you may not turn on a circular red signal at that approach. The MUTCD requires a NO TURN ON RED sign wherever a right turn on red (or a left turn on red from a one-way street onto a one-way street) is to be prohibited.
Where is the NO TURN ON RED sign placed?
The MUTCD says it should be installed near the appropriate signal head. If a conventional-size sign is on the far side of the intersection more than 120 feet past the stop line, a duplicate sign must go on the near side.
Why do some intersections ban turns on red?
The MUTCD lists conditions an engineering study can weigh, including poor sight distance to approaching vehicles, intersection layouts that could cause unexpected conflicts, an exclusive pedestrian or bicycle phase, too many pedestrian conflicts with right-turn-on-red movements, a skewed intersection angle, or more than three right-turn-on-red crashes on that approach in 12 months.
Can a NO TURN ON RED sign apply only at certain times?
Yes. The MUTCD allows a blank-out sign that lights up only while the restriction applies, or a static sign with a plaque showing the hours and days.
Can No Left Turn signs be used at roundabouts?
Not to prohibit left turns onto the circle. The MUTCD says No Left Turn, No U-Turn and No U or Left Turn signs shall not be used on roundabout approaches to stop drivers from turning left onto the circular roadway, because they could confuse drivers about the legal movements around a roundabout.
