Lake Effect Snow: How It Forms and How to Drive in It
Michigan City sits on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, and the National Weather Service says lake effect snow is common across the Great Lakes region in late fall and winter. Here is how lake effect snow forms, what the NWS alerts mean and how to drive when a band moves in.

The short answer
Lake effect snow comes in narrow, intense bands that can drop 2 to 3 inches an hour and cut visibility suddenly, while skies may be clear a mile or two away. Check NWS alerts before you leave, and avoid or delay travel during a Snow Squall Warning. If you are caught in a squall and cannot exit, slow down, turn on your headlights and hazard lights, leave extra room and do not slam on the brakes.
What lake effect snow is
Lake effect snow occurs when cold air, often originating from Canada, moves across the open waters of the Great Lakes, the National Weather Service says. As the cold air passes over the unfrozen, relatively warm lake water, warmth and moisture are transferred into the lowest part of the atmosphere. The air rises, and clouds form and grow into a narrow band that produces 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more.
Wind direction is a key factor in which areas get lake effect snow. Heavy snow may be falling in one location while the sun shines just a mile or two away in either direction, and the shape of the land and water matters too. That is why NWS meteorologists weigh wind direction, geography and other factors when they forecast it.

What NWS lake effect and winter alerts mean
Your local NWS office issues these alerts based on local criteria:
| Alert | What it means for drivers |
|---|---|
| Lake Effect Snow Warning | Lake-induced snow squalls or heavy showers are expected to produce significant snowfall. Bands can bring very heavy snow with sudden drops in visibility, and driving may become hazardous at times. |
| Lake Effect Snow Advisory | Lake effect snow and blowing snow below warning criteria. Assume travel will be difficult in some areas; some bands can still produce several inches with sudden visibility drops. |
| Snow Squall Warning | A short-fused, highly localized warning. Avoid or delay travel until the squall passes your location. |
| Winter Storm Warning | A significant winter weather event with snow, ice, sleet or blowing snow. Travel will become difficult or impossible in some situations; delay travel until conditions improve. |
| Winter Weather Advisory | Wintry weather is expected but below warning criteria. Be prepared for winter driving conditions and use caution. |

Snow squalls: brief but dangerous
Snow squalls, often tied to strong cold fronts, move in and out quickly and typically last less than an hour, the NWS says. Sudden whiteout conditions combined with falling temperatures can make roads icy in just a few minutes, even where no large winter storm is underway. Accumulations are typically an inch or less, but gusty winds, falling temperatures and quick drops in visibility can make conditions extremely dangerous for drivers, and there is a long history of deadly crashes tied to squalls.
The NWS says there truly is no safe place on the highway during a snow squall. If you are already driving and cannot exit the road in time, reduce your speed, turn on your headlights and hazard lights, and allow plenty of distance from the car ahead. Avoid slamming on the brakes: on slick or icy roads, it can contribute to losing control and raise the risk of a chain-reaction crash.

Driving tips when the snow bands roll in
The National Weather Service's advice if you must drive during winter weather:
Check before you go
Get the latest NWS forecast and warnings before you start the car.
Slow down
Even roads that just look wet can be slick.
Clear the whole vehicle
Make sure it is completely clear of ice and snow. Flying snow from cars causes accidents.
Share your route
Let someone know where you are going and the route you will take.
Handle a skid calmly
Ease off the gas and steer the way you want the front of the car to go. With anti-lock brakes, apply steady pressure; never pump ABS brakes.
Pull over if you cannot see
Stop at the side of the road until visibility improves. Once stopped, turn off your lights and set the parking brake so another driver does not follow your taillights into you.

If your vehicle gets stuck
The NWS says to stay in your vehicle: in wind-driven snow and cold, you can quickly become disoriented if you leave it.
Heat safely
Run the motor about 10 minutes each hour for heat, and open a window a little for fresh air while it runs.
Clear the exhaust
Clear snow from the exhaust pipe to avoid gas poisoning; the NWS also says to crack a window while the motor runs to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Be visible
Turn on the dome light at night when the engine runs, tie a bright cloth to the antenna or door, and raise the hood after the snow stops.
Pack for it
Carry a fully charged phone, a car charger and an emergency supplies kit before you leave.

Lake effect snow FAQ
What is lake effect snow?
The National Weather Service (NWS) says lake effect snow forms when cold air, often from Canada, moves across the open waters of the Great Lakes. Warmth and moisture from the unfrozen lake rise into the air, and clouds grow into narrow bands that can produce 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more.
Why can it be snowing hard in one place and sunny nearby?
Lake effect snow falls in narrow bands. The NWS says heavy snow may be falling in one location while the sun shines just a mile or two away, and wind direction is a key factor in which areas get the snow.
What is a Lake Effect Snow Warning?
The NWS issues one when widespread or localized lake-induced snow squalls or heavy showers are expected to produce significant snowfall. The bands can bring very heavy snow with sudden drops in visibility, and driving conditions may become hazardous.
What is the difference between a Lake Effect Snow Warning and Advisory?
An advisory is for lake effect snow (and blowing snow) that stays below warning criteria. The NWS says to expect lake effect snow showers and assume travel will be difficult in some areas, since some bands can still drop several inches with sudden visibility drops. Local NWS offices set the criteria.
What should I do if a snow squall hits while I am driving?
The NWS says to avoid or delay travel during a Snow Squall Warning. If you are already driving and cannot exit in time, reduce your speed, turn on your headlights and hazard lights, leave plenty of distance and avoid slamming on the brakes.
What should I do if I get stuck in the snow?
Stay in the vehicle, the NWS says. Run the motor about 10 minutes each hour for heat, open a window a little for fresh air to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, clear snow from the exhaust pipe, and make yourself visible to rescuers.
What does The Works at Michigan City Ford include?
