The short answer

Check 511IN.org, INDOT's interactive map of road conditions and closures, and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security county travel advisory map before you go. A county Watch means only essential travel is recommended; a Warning means refrain from all travel. On the road, slow down, leave extra space and give snowplows room.

Indiana county travel advisory levels

Local travel advisories may be issued by local governments, such as counties. The IDHS map defines the three levels:

LevelWhat it means
Advisory (lowest)Routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation. Use caution or avoid these areas.
WatchConditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended.
Warning (highest)Travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. Individuals are directed to refrain from all travel, comply with emergency measures and obey the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

Before you leave

INDOT's "Be Prepared" list:

Knowledge

Find out about the driving conditions before leaving home. Safe drivers know the weather, and their limits.

Clear

Remove snow from your windows, lights, brake lights and signals so you can see and be seen.

Inspect

Check your tires, wiper blades, fluids, lights, belts and hoses.

Time and kit

Leave plenty of time, and keep a basic winter survival kit: winter travel gear, tire chains, an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables and road flares.

Road conditions to watch for

INDOT warns about these conditions:

ConditionWhat INDOT says
First snow or iceDrivers often are not prepared and forget to take it slow. Drive well below the posted speed limit and leave plenty of room between cars.
Black iceRoads that seem dry may be slippery. Take it slow approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges and shady areas, all hot spots for black ice.
Limited visibilityStay attentive and reduce speed. Know what is going on around you.
Four-wheel driveGo slowly. Four-wheel drive may get you going faster, but it won't help you stop sooner, and you may not maintain control any better once you lose traction.

From INDOT, Winter Driving Safety Tips, read October 29, 2026.

Snowplow safety

From INDOT's tips and its Winter Driving Safety brochure:

Distance

Give plows room to work. They are wide and can cross the centerline or shoulder. Don't tailgate, and try not to pass.

70 feet back

Stay 70 feet, about four car lengths, from the maintenance vehicle so the driver can see you.

Never on the right

Never pass a plow on the right; plows push snow and spread sand to the right.

Speed and vision

Plows travel below the speed limit, so be patient. The operator's view is restricted: you may see them, but they don't always see you.

From INDOT, Winter Driving Safety Tips and the Winter Driving Safety brochure, read October 29, 2026.

How to drive on snow and ice

INDOT's message is simple: slow down. The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop, so accelerate slowly on snow and ice to avoid slipping or sliding. Leave extra room between you and the vehicle ahead, because it takes extra time and distance to stop on slick roads.

Brake early, brake slowly and never slam on the brakes. Avoid cruise control and abrupt steering, take it slow when merging, and watch what other vehicles are doing ahead of you; their actions can warn you of problems and give you time to react.
